Peanut Butter Protein Balls
Keeping fueled on rides is critical for performance and enjoyment, there are lots of commercially available products to fuel your ride on the market. Personally I never like the gels and bars you can buy, gels don’t really provide any satisfaction, fine I guess if you are racing as you are getting the energy you require. For me out on a big day i need food that my body knows I’m eating, also I need to be enjoying it so i do actually eat.
One short to medium rides of a few hours, I’ll go with handy foods like flapjack, chocolate bars or these protein balls. On longer rides I’ll take sandwiches, Crisps or other real food as well. I do carry gels and the like for emergencies, but I do find actually eating something gives me more of a mental boost as well as the nutritional boost.
These peanut butter protein balls are really easy to make as well as providing both carbs and protein. The chocolate chips within them gives you the happy kick that helps you get though the ride. I always find that chocolate has a massive psychological boost and will pick me up when I’m at a low point and will keep me going.
Peanut Butter Protein Balls
Trail ready bite size peanut butter protein / energy balls.
Ingredients
- 130g Oats
- 85g Peanut butter
- 30g Chocolate Chips
Instructions
- Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl until combined
- Chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes
- Remove from the fridge and form into bite sized balls
Notes
You can additionally roll the balls in oats, to stop some of the stickiness. I have made these with fake peanut butter, as we had some lying around, so if you have a peanut allergy the soy based nut free peanut butter is fine to use, as would any other nut butter, Almond, Cashew etc or a mix.
