South Cerney Thames & Severn canal

Jan 6, 2013 by Ian Carruthers | This post may contain affiliate links.

This is a short walk along the Thames and Severn Canal starting and finishing in South Cerney.

The starting point is the centre of the village, or where the chip shop, curry house and two of the village pubs are.

We leave the village via Bowow to the left of the Old George, this maybe a good place to stop for a well earned pint following our walk. This road leaves the village between two streams of the river Churn, one of which becomes a mill race for the old mill.

After crossing the old railway line (Cirencester to Cricklade) we come to the Thames and Severn canal, or rather what is left of it.

Turn right down the gravel drive of Crane farm, here welcome to the first of three locks on this walk Boxbush lock.

Now we now get on the to old tow path of the canal proper.

Along the path of the canal we come across the second of the locks on our walk and the remains of a farm bridge.

We all to soon come to the end of the canal section of our walk at the final and most impressive lock of our walk, complete with lock keepers cottage.

Here we have a choice over our route back to the village we can turn left down the track or continue on a little further, passing the gateway centre and Cotswold Outdoor where you can get a cup of tea or a new pair of walking boots. Sadly on the occasion that I did the walk for the blog both routes forward were cut off due to vast amount of rain we have had recently, so I had no choice other than to retract my steps.

    Happy walking
